Building on the
Bravo promise, Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) brings the PostScript revolution
to the web with mathematical imaging that will display on any system to
the maximum resolution of the users computer screen. First shown at the
Fall Internet World under the title PGML (Precision Graphic Markup Language),
the promise of low bandwith graphics is soon to be a reality.
Unlike the GIF or JPEG format, the SVG is not pixel based,
but vector object based and once the graphic is downloaded, can easily
be scaled to any size. One could easily change the color of the object
or its orientation without additional internet load. The file is realized
on the client side.
A compliment to the Macromedia Flash technology, the web will be alive
with small file SVG images with built-in web technologies. As the Flash
product uses vector based images in an animation package, SVG will replace
GIF images and challenge our current view of the web with displayable
fonts and graphics not yet found on the web.
